File type is unsupported
What to do if you have a document to upload, but you see an "Unsupported file type" or "Something went wrong while uploading files" error.
In order to increase the chances of genuine and official documentation (eg bank statements, mortgage offers, solicitors letters etc) being uploaded, and to reduce the possibility of malware being passed into the system, we only accept pdfs and photos of documents (.jpg & .png).
Most notably this means we do not accept .csv, .doc or .xls files - this is because (i) these file types are easily manipulated prior to upload, and (ii) malware is easily inserted into these documents.
If the document you are trying to upload is not in one of those formats, you should convert it to pdf (File --> Save as...) or take a photo of it before uploading.
File is too big
What to do if you are trying to upload an attachment that is too large
Armalytix attempts to compress files before uploading but there is a file size limit of around 20mb after compression, and notably we have seen that pdfs do not compress very much.
If you're trying to upload a file that's too big, we suggest one of the following:
pdf:
Split the file up into separate files of a few pages each, and then multi-select the separate files before uploading.
Mac:
- Open the file in Preview
- If thumbnails are not shown on the left hit View/Thumbnails
- Hit File/Duplicate
- Delete some thumbnails
- Hit File/Save... and save the file
- Repeat steps 1-5 as necessary
Windows:
- open the PDF file (for example, in Microsoft Edge, or Adobe Reader)
- Go to File > Print, then select the "Microsoft Print to PDF" printer.
- Choose the pages you would like to split from the original PDF, enter this in the Page Range you would like to print, and then press Print.
- Choose the location where to save the new PDF with just the selected pages.
- Repeat steps 1-4 as necessary
png, jpg and jpeg:
To reduce the file size, follow the following steps:
Mac:
- Open the file in Preview
- Hit Tools/Adjust Size
- Ensure "Scale Proportionally" is checked
- Reduce the height or width
- Hit File/Save
Windows:
The steps to take on Windows are different depending on the version of Windows that you are running. This Microsoft link outlines the different steps to follow.
I don't have the attachment that you are asking me to upload
The files we ask you to upload are based on your answers to the previous questions, or in the case of manual balances are statements for the account in question, so in most cases should be relevant to your circumstances - if you don't have the document then it may be that you need to go back a couple of steps and revise your answers.
However, if you have definitely answered the questions correctly but you just don't have the necessary attachment, in most cases you will be able to hit "Skip" and then you'll be asked to explain why you didn't upload it.
If you aren't able to skip the upload, then it means the company that asked you to complete the report has decided that this is a critical document - in this case you should upload the most relevant documentation you have.
