Overview

To verify an Australian driver's licence, you'll need your licence number and your card number. This article shows you where to find each one on your card, for every state and territory.

Licence number vs card number

Your licence number identifies you as the licence holder and stays the same when you renew your licence. Your card number identifies the physical card itself, and it changes every time a new card is issued.

Both numbers are printed on your licence, but the position differs by state and territory, and sometimes by when your card was issued. Find your state or territory below.

Australian Capital Territory (ACT)

• Licence number: Front of the card, under "Licence No."
• Card number: Front of the card, next to your photo.

New South Wales (NSW)

• Licence number: Front of the card, under "Licence No."
• Card number: Front of the card, top right-hand corner. If your card was reissued (for example, after the 2022 Optus data breach), check the back instead.

Northern Territory (NT)

• Licence number: Front of the card, under "Licence Number."
• Card number: Back of the card, near the bottom. The exact position can vary depending on when your card was issued.

Queensland (QLD)

• Licence number: Front of the card, under "Licence No."
• Card number: Front and/or back of the card, bottom right-hand corner, labelled "Card number."

South Australia (SA)

• Licence number: Front of the card, under "Licence No."
• Card number: Back of the card.

Tasmania (TAS)

• Licence number: Front of the card, under "LIC NO."
• Card number: Back of the card, top right-hand corner.

Victoria (VIC)

• Licence number: Front of the card, under "Licence No."
• Card number: Back of the card, top right-hand corner on newer licences. If you can't find it there, check the small text underneath your birth year on the back.

Western Australia (WA)

• Licence number: Front of the card, under "Licence Number."
• Card number: Back of the card.

Still can't find your card number?

If your card doesn't show a card number at all, it may be an older licence issued before card numbers were introduced in your state. Contact your state or territory's licensing authority to check, or get in touch with us if your verification check continues to fail.
